Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a public speaker. She founded Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing portrayals of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are depicted in popular culture. In addition, she works to expose the issues surrounding the harassment and targeted assaults on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is dedicated to breaking down stereotypes that are in the pop culture. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she's given presentations at TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. The ambitious young lady was harassed by the Internet for starting a web series on gender in videogames. This attack was not enough to deter her. Instead, it strengthened her commitment to be a feminist as well as media critic. Sarkeesian has been awarded many awards for her contributions to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency which is an educational organization that focuses on the ways women are depicted within popular culture narratives.
